Women’s 2026 March Madness, 6 Bracket-Busting Cinderellas in NCAA Tournament
· Yahoo Sports
The Women’s 2026 March Madness NCAA Tournament field is officially set for March Madness. While the conversation begins with UConn and its quest for a seventh perfect season, the energy in the air suggests a shift in the traditional hierarchy. In a sport where the top seeds historically dominate, increased parity has turned the opening rounds into a minefield. From established giants on upset alert to mid-major programs playing with house money, these six teams have the tools to shred your bracket by the end of the first weekend.

No. 11 Rhode Island (FORT WORTH 3 vs. No. 6 Alabama)
URI coach Tammi Reiss high fives guard Ines Debroise after scoring in the second half.Rhode Island is a threat because they pair veteran composure with a defensive identity that travels. Under Tammi Reiss, the Rams secured a program-record 28 wins by suffocating opponents, holding them to just 34% shooting from the floor this season. They face an Alabama team that looked lost in the SEC Tournament, failing to put a single player in double digits during their exit.
Rhode Island’s backcourt, led by Brooklyn Gray, excels at forcing long, contested jumpers. With Alabama coming off a performance where they shot under 25%, the Rams have the defensive discipline to turn this into a low-scoring grind that favors the underdog.
No. 10 Villanova (SACRAMENTO 2 vs. No. 7 Texas Tech)
Villanova thrives on a high-IQ style of play that punishes teams unaccustomed to its constant motion. Led by Jasmine Bascoe, who averaged 18.8 points and 4.8 assists, the Wildcats are among the nation’s leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio. This efficiency is a major problem for a Texas Tech team making its first appearance since 2013.
The Lady Raiders are prone to late-game collapses, evidenced by their 21-4 scoring deficit in the final quarter of their conference tournament loss. Villanova’s ability to protect the ball and hunt for high-percentage looks should take advantage of Texas Tech’s tendency to lose defensive focus under pressure.
No. 12 Murray State (FORT WORTH 1 vs. No. 5 Maryland)
If you value offensive efficiency, Murray State is the bracket buster for you. The Racers are the fifth-highest scoring team in the country, averaging nearly 84 points per game. Halli Poock is a legitimate star who can score from all three levels, and she enters the tournament shooting 45% from beyond the arc.
They draw a Maryland team that is physically talented but lacks depth, even before season-ending injuries to key starters. The Terps rank in the bottom third of the Big Ten in three-point defense, which is a recipe for disaster against a Murray State squad that averages 9.5 made triples per contest.
No. 10 Tennessee (FORT WORTH 3 vs. No. 7 NC State)

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn ImagesTennessee finds itself in the rare position of being a double-digit seed with a championship pedigree. Despite a late-season slide, the Lady Vols possess elite rebounding metrics, ranking in the top 15 nationally in offensive board percentage. This physicality will test an NC State team that has looked surprisingly soft in the paint lately, dropping four of its last six games.
Janiah Barker and Malaysia Cooper provide a size advantage that the Wolfpack struggled to contain in their recent double-digit losses to Notre Dame. If Tennessee wins the battle on the glass, their talent ceiling is high enough to reach the second weekend.
No. 11 Nebraska (SACRAMENTO 2 vs. No. 6 Baylor)
Nebraska’s path to an upset is built on Baylor’s inability to find a secondary scoring option. The Bears have been held under 60 points in five of their eight losses this season, relying almost exclusively on Taliah Scott. Nebraska counters with a balanced attack led by Britt Prince and a defense that ranks second in the Big Ten in blocks per game.
The Huskers are excellent at protecting the rim, which forces opponents to become one-dimensional jump-shooting teams. If Nebraska can limit Scott’s trips to the free-throw line, Baylor lacks the offensive firepower to keep up with the Huskers’ transition game.
No. 13 Miami Ohio (FORT WORTH 3 vs. No. 4 West Virginia)
The RedHawks are the sleeper team of the Fort Worth region because they play a style that negates high-major athleticism. Miami Ohio leads the MAC in scoring defense, allowing just 58.5 points per game.
While West Virginia likes to use a full-court press to generate chaos, the RedHawks are incredibly disciplined, ranking in the top 20 nationally for fewest turnovers per game. Amber Tretter is the X-factor here; her ability to stretch the floor as a shooting big will pull West Virginia’s shot-blockers away from the rim.
If the RedHawks can turn this into a half-court execution battle, they have the shooting percentages to pull off a massive stunner.
