Flooding on major Toronto roads as area hit with up to 40 mm of rain

· Toronto Sun

Drivers have been urged to use extreme caution as heavy rain is expected throughout the day in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

According to Environment Canada, between 20 and 40 mm will fall by the end of Wednesday, though it warned higher amounts are possible in areas that are hit with thunderstorms.

Given the fluctuating temperatures over the last few days, the ground — either saturated or frozen — will have little ability to absorb the deluge of rainfall, the agency explained.

Toronto Police are advising drivers to slow down and allow for extra travel time as the conditions continue to deteriorate.

Flooded roadways

Officers have received multiple calls about flooded roadways, specifically naming:

  • Gardiner Expressway at York St.
  • Lawrence Ave. E. at Railside Rd.
  • Birchmount Rd. and Huntingwood Dr.
  • Northline Rd. and O’Connor Dr.

In several areas, pooling water has forced vehicles to divert or turn around.

Expect pooling in low-lying areas as well, Environment Canada noted.

“Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas,” the agency recommended.

“Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

More winter to come, however

Toronto should see a high of 15C before the temperatures plummet overnight to -2C (though with the windchill, it will feel like -10C).

Those seasonal temperatures remain as Thursday will be a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 1C.

However, winter isn’t done with us yet as Friday is expected to be a mixed bag of precipitation (flurries and/or rain) due to temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, with a high of 2C expected.

Expect more of the same on the weekend, as March continues to be wild .

It’s a wet month for the city as freezing rain is always a common risk due to warm fronts colliding with lingering cold air.

Those living closer to Lake Ontario could also see cooler temperatures than northern parts of the GTA such as Richmond Hill or Vaughan.
