When the Toronto Blue Jays decided to move on from Bo Bichette, the decision created plenty of debate among the fanbase. However, recent comments from Bichette may explain why Toronto ultimately let the franchise shortstop walk before he signed with the New York Mets.
Bichette is currently transitioning to third base with the Mets, and the change hasn’t been easy. Speaking recently about the move, Bichette admitted the position change has come with challenges.
“Third base is a challenge, for sure,’’ Bichette said, per Dan Martin of the New York Post. “I’m learning something new, but I have a good understanding of the growing pains, but I also understand I have the ability to play the position.”
While Bichette seemingly remains confident that he can handle the role, the comment highlights the type of uncertainty Toronto may have been trying to avoid. The Blue Jays spent years building their roster around Bichette at shortstop, but he just never figured it out up the middle
For the Mets, the move represented a gamble worth taking. Bichette’s offensive skillset has been one of the most productive in the league, and if he can be serviceable at third, New York should be content.
Regardless, this was certainly part of the reason the Blue Jays decided to go their separate ways.
