The Detroit Lions will need a new backup QB

The Detroit Lions will have a new quarterback backing up Jared Goff in 2026. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Lions quarterback Kyle Allen has agreed to a two-year, $4.1 million deal with the Buffalo Bills. The deal has a potential max value of $6.1 million.

Allen joined the Lions last year to compete with former third-round pick Hendon Hooker for the backup job. After a strong training camp and preseason, the Lions opted to stick with the veteran and release Hooker. Goff was healthy all year, so the Lions never had to rely on Allen during the regular season.
Now the Lions must look to free agency to fill out their quarterback room. The only other quarterback they carried on the roster last year was C.J. Beathard, who spent the year on the practice squad. He is currently a free agency.
Other current free agent backup quarterbacks still available include Tyrod Taylor, Jimmy Garoppolo, Russell Wilson, and Geno Smith—among others.
Kyle Allen is now the fourth Lions free agent to agree to terms with another team on Monday. He joins:
- DT Roy Lopez (Cardinals)
- LB Alex Anzalone (Buccaneers)
- CB Amik Robertson (Commanders)
