One Proteas player walks away with T20 medal

Of course that was none other than legendary former Proteas paceman Morne Morkel, who has been with the India team as the bowling coach since September 2024.

He has since been credited with evolving India’s bowling unit into a more aggressive, wicket-taking force that defended their title in the 2026 tournament.

Former Proteas player can celebrate with a T20 World Cup medal

During his playing days Morkel formed part of a Proteas generation of players who heartbreakingly missed out on ICC titles, but he has now been able to bag a winner’s medal as part of an ‘opposing dugout’.

Previously, the 41-year-old has described his decision to join the Indian team as a deeply personal and emotional “life milestone”.

Big impact

While his professional relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir played a major role in his appointment, Morkel has highlighted several broader motivations for taking on what is often called the most high-pressure job in world cricket.

“The blue shirt carries a lot of expectations. For me, having the experience, going through that [pressure], passing that sort of knowledge on will be the goal,” he previously commented about the role

“Coming here, this is a set-up that operates by itself. To protect that and make it better in small ways is going to be the goal. We are quite lucky to have quality senior players… they will lead the charge, and my responsibility is to support them.”
