The Blue Devils’ starting five wasted no time establishing a scoring gap, ending the first quarter at 22-8. Susquehanna Valley’s Ava Kariam was the first to kick-start the momentum for the Sabers, scoring 7 out of the 8 points in the quarter.

After easing into the flow of the game, the Sabers caught up to the Blue Devils’ scoring pace, earning a 10-point second quarter while holding the hot Chenango Forks team to 12 points.

Chenango Forks’ aggression in the paint on one end of the court kept the Sabers to only 5 points in the third quarter, and on the other end, brought the Blue Devils to the free-throw line six times. Nine out of the 15 points scored were from free throws, bringing the Blue Devils up 49-23 at the end of the third quarter.

A late surge from Susquehanna Valley, who scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, was immediately matched by an 18-point fourth quarter from the Blue Devils. Warpus accounted for half of the team’s points in the fourth, scoring 3 three-pointers that helped lay out the 27-point victory.‎ ‎

‎ ‎The game at a glance:

Windsor’s 2-point victory was led by Nico Soriano, who finished with 19 points, and was followed by Bearden Moran, who finished with 15 points.

Both Windsor and Watkins Glen went back and forth in points throughout the first half. Watkins Glen’s Christopher Simiele and Jude Santos combined for 32 points in the first half alone to put the score at 32-29, in favor of the Lake Hawks.

Simiele’s 17-point first half, scoring 4 three-pointers within 20 minutes of the game, had him blowing kisses to the opposing Windsor crowd. Santos’ offensive rebounds and aggression in the paint would also send the Watkins Glen fans into an uproar after several and-1 shots end the first half.

The Lake Hawks went on to outscore the Black Knights in the third quarter 15-9, ending the third at 47-38.

The Black Knights came back from a 10-point deficit, with Soriano scoring 11 out of the team’s 20 points in the fourth quarter, earning him several “MVP” chants from the Winsdor crowd.

After some disconnection underneath the Watkins Glen basket, the Black Knights took hold of the ball in the last few seconds of the game to end the score at 58-56.

Simiele led Watkins Glen with 29 points, and Santos followed with 25 points.‎ ‎

‎ ‎The game at a glance:

Maine-Endwell’s 26-point victory was led by Marco Konrad, who scored a game-high 34 points.

Horseheads sweeps U-E to capture a third straight title

Class AA Girls Final: Horseheads 51-23 Union-Endicott

‎ ‎The game at a glance:

Freshman point-guard Samantha Bonnell and junior Maddie Ribble combined for 34 points in the 51-23 victory. Bonnell led with 20 points and Ribble added 14.

Horseheads went into the final matchup with a generous idea of Union-Endicott’s offensive strategies from a previous matchup between the two back in early January, where Horseheads came out on top with a 22-point victory.

Horseheads’ relentless defense throughout the first half kept the Tigers from achieving second-chance shots. Despite entering the third quarter with a 20-8 deficit, the Tigers managed to change the pace in the second half, amassing 15 points, an effort led by Gianna Gennarelli, who finished the game with 12 points.

Horseheads’ 20-2 third-quarter run, offensive and defensive rebounding, would push the scoring gap even further to finish the game at 51-23.

‎ ‎Up Next: Horseheads (17-3) will take on Section 9’s Cornwall Central (19-2) at 1:30 p.m. on March 15 at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena

Seton Catholic outlasts last year’s champions

Class AA Boys Final: Seton Catholic Central 57 – 45 Binghamton

‎ ‎The game at a glance:

Malik Wimberly led Seton Catholic with 19 points, while Liam Kozel and Allan Eagles contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Seton Catholic played a different game against Binghamton than the one they played in December, where the Saints came away with a 64-43 victory.

Despite a 5-0 head start for the Saints, both teams exchanged hard-fought drives to the basket throughout the first half, bringing the score to a close 23-18 outcome.

Wimberly stepped up the offensive pace in the third quarter to break the slower, more defensive pace that kept scoring low for both teams in the previous quarter.

Binghamton’s Eli Johnson, Zahir Marshall and Cashawn Fleming chipped away at the Saints’ lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, to put the Patriots at a 36-32 deficit.

The Saints’ offensive chemistry, namely between Kozel and Angel O’Connor, created a 15-point lead to put the score at 48-33 with less than five minutes left in the game.

Despite the scoring gap, the Patriots still refused to let the game slip away, scoring 3 three-points in the last three minutes of the game to put the score at 54-42 in favor of the Saints.

Seton Catholic closed out the game at 57-45 to earn the Saints their first Class AA title.

Binghamton was led by Jah-lon Cook and Cashawn Fleming, who contributed 13 points each.‎ ‎
