Edmeston tops Schenevus to win first section title in boys basketball

DELHI — Landon Wust scored a team-high 17 points as No. 2 seeded Edmeston won a Section IV Class D boys basketball title by beating No. 4 Schenevus, 65-59, in the championship game Saturday, March 7, at SUNY Delhi’s Clark Field House.

It is the first section title in the sport for the Panther boys, but second section title in less than five months, following a run to the soccer Final Four in the fall.

Edmeston scored the first six points of the game, forcing the Dragons to call time out just a minute into the first quarter.

Schenevus rallied to within two, 8-6, but Edmeston closed the quarter strong, taking a 20-10 lead in the second quarter.

Edmeston led at halftime, 34-22, and after three quarters, 48-37.

Allen Osborne had a game-high 29 points for Schenevus, which rallied late.

The teams finished second and third in the Tri-Valley League regular season, but both teams upset No. 1 seeded Morris in the past two weeks. Edmeston won the TVL title with a league playoff win over the Mustangs on Feb. 20, in New Berlin, while Schenevus upset the Mustangs in the section semifinals on March 4, at SUNY Delhi.

Sawyer Bridger scored 14 points for Schenevus (15-7).

Gavin Zinger scored 14 points for the Panthers, which also got 12 points from Braymon Clark.

It was the third time the Panthers had beaten the Dragons this season.

Edmeston (20-3) will play the Section III winner in the regional championship at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 15, at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse.

No. 1 Oriskany and No. 2 Sackets Harbor will play for the Section III Class D title on Sunday, March 8, at SRC Arena.
