Liam Walsh hopes scoring the winning goal to send Luton Town to Wembley for the Vertu Trophy final will make amends for his past indiscretions as a Hatters player.

The midfielder's long range shot in the 82nd minute completed a player-of-the- match performance, ensuring a 2-1 victory against Northampton Town.

Walsh faced scrutiny from Luton fans during last season's struggles and subsequent relegation from the Championship.

He publicly apologsed after picking up two red cards in six games, meaning he served a four-game ban over a crucial 2024-25 festive period, in addition to being fined by the club.

Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio, Walsh said he hopes performance in the semi-final would help him reconcile with Hatters' supporters.

"The position I was in last year, I said, after all that happened I did owe the fans something," he continued.

"I hope that they remember that I said that now I've taken us to Wembley.

"Tough moments don't last and tough people do. I always found a way to come out the other side. I've had good people around me to help me get where I am today."

"I'm just glad I can pay the fans back."

Walsh arrived at Luton during the summer of 2024 and has since made 56 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The Hatters, currently 10th in the League One table and six points off the play-off places, will face Stockport County in the Vertu Trophy final on Sunday, 12 April at Wembley.

"It's been an up and down season for us, and I think this just gives us the little boost that we've needed," Walsh continued.

"We said earlier on in the week we owe the fans everything really, they have stuck by us lately as well.

"We haven't been doing as good as we want to in the league. But I'm just glad we can get there. It's going to be a good day out."

"I've always dreamed of playing at Wembley."
